Leaving your little one — even with people you trust — can stir up a lot of feelings. That’s why we’ve put together a few helpful tips and answers to the questions we hear most often from first-time boarders. A little preparation goes a long way toward making your dog’s stay smooth, comfortable, and stress-free for everyone involved.
Before Your Pup’s Stay
What vaccinations does my dog need before boarding?
All guests at Petite Paw Palace must be up to date on core vaccinations, including Rabies, DHPP-L, and Bordetella. Canine Influenza is Highly Recommended. Please send us a copy of your dog’s vaccination records before their first visit.
Should I schedule a trial visit first?
We always recommend it. A short daycare visit or meet-and-greet before a longer boarding stay helps your dog get comfortable with the space, the people, and the routine — so when boarding day arrives, it already feels familiar.
How early should I book?
For holidays, school breaks, and summer travel, we recommend booking as early as possible — these dates fill quickly. For regular stays, a few weeks of notice is typically enough, but we’ll always do our best to accommodate last-minute requests.
What to Pack
What should I bring for my dog’s stay?
We recommend packing:
- Enough food for the entire stay (plus a little extra, just in case)
- Any medications, clearly labeled with dosing instructions
- A familiar item from home, like a blanket or favorite toy
- Your veterinarian’s contact information
- Emergency contact info for you or a trusted backup
Should I bring my dog’s own food?
Yes, please. Keeping your dog on their regular diet helps prevent stomach upset and maintains a consistent routine. Please pre-portion your dogs meals in labeled zip-lock bags.
Can I bring a bed or blanket from home?
Absolutely. Familiar smells are comforting, and many small dogs settle in more quickly when something from home is nearby. We just ask that items be machine-washable in case of any accidents and that beds do not exceed 24” x 24” inches unless your pup is
staying in one of our Royal Family Suites.
During the Stay
Will I get updates on my dog?
Of course! We provide photo updates and check-ins during your dog’s stay for $5/day of their stay. If you’d like to check in with us directly, you’re always welcome to call.
What if my dog doesn’t eat or seems anxious?
It’s normal for some dogs to eat less or seem unsettled during the first day or two — especially on their first stay. Our team watches closely, offers gentle encouragement, and will reach out to you if we have any concerns.
What happens if there’s a medical issue?
Your dog’s safety is our top priority. In the event of a medical concern, we’ll contact you right away and follow the emergency care instructions you’ve provided. We also have a relationship with The Shot Spot, our sister veterinary facility that’s located right across the street.
After the Stay
How will my dog act when they come home?
Many dogs come home happy and tired — boarding involves more activity and stimulation than a typical day at home, and a good, long nap is normal. If you notice anything unusual after pickup, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
